Problems Helped with Psychotherapy & Counselling

All About the Types of Problems Helped with Psychotherapy in Wolverhampton

Psychotherapy can help with an enormous range of problems, from Phobias through to what might be considered more ‘serious’ problems such as Depression and Anxiety.

Traditionally, health issues tend to be divided into two major categories, (1) Biological / Medical and (2) Psychological, although there is much debate about whether or not it is accurate or even useful to classify people as either “biological machines” or “minds separate from bodies”.

At the moment most Western cultures do classify things in this way, so we tend to treat problems with drugs that modify the “symptoms” but pay little attention to the “cause”.

Biological and Medical problems are those problems that are caused or due to some adverse factor in the body’s chemistry that are mainly treated through pharmaceutical solutions or medical interventions. In general terms, these types of problems can and should only be addressed by a medically trained professionals and are in general unsuitable for treatment by psychological therapies.

Psychological problems are those problems that are the direct result of cognitive (‘thinking’) or perceptual anomalies (‘belief systems’) and although are often treated by the use of drug therapies, tend to respond favourably to psychological interventions.

If you are unsure about the nature of your particular problem we recommend that, in the first instance, prospective clients seek medical advice from their G.P. to rule out any biological problems before consulting for any kind of Psychological assistance.

Are Problems Really Either Psychological or Biological?

This has been a difficult area for many, many years and the central problem can be highlighted in the following way:

Medical problems can have a negative psychological impact on a person to the extent that they become anxious, or perhaps depressed as a direct result of their medical symptoms.

So are these anxiety or depression symptoms the direct result of the medical problem or are they unique to the person and the way they “feel” about their problem?

How is it that some people can experience traumatic childhood experiences and are affected very little by it, and other’s lives are terribly blighted by the same experiences?

The real problem is that we cannot realistically separate out human beings into either biological or psychological entities as our minds and bodies exist simultaneously (symbiotically) and one affects the other.

Research in the field of Neuroscience provides clear evidence that psychological interventions can lead to physical changes in the structure of the brain which in turn changes the way we feel and perceive the world around us.

You can read more about the way Psychotherapies change the brain structure on this article on the “Psychiatric Times” website:
